Hungarian IR#19 for the 1799 Project

Work continues on the 1799 project with the mustering out of two battalions of Infantry Regiment #19.  A fine looking regiment with blue facings and the traditional, blue Hungarian trousers and short boots.
Figures are AB Miniatures and there is just something about these Austrians or Hungarians in casquet that I find very appealing.  Is it because we are so used to seeing Napoleonic Austrians in helmet or shako?  I cannot put my finger on it but I am compelled to painting Austrians in casquet for this project.  Of course, plenty of Austrians in helmet are readying themselves for a trip to the painting desk but these are my favorite.
Expect to see these fine fellows near year-end on the battlefield as gaming revisits the early campaigns in Northern Italy.

    1. Jon - meant to say to you - nothing to do with current post - previous discussion we had re using board game to manage a miniatures campaign, you recommended Victory Games' "1809: Napoleon's Danube Campaign" - it's taken me a while, but I've managed to get my hands on a good used set! Hasn't arrived yet, but I'm very pleased, and thanks for the tip! [You can delete this comment if you wish!]

    2. I hope you enjoy the game. Zucker created a terrific system for operational logistics and the 1809 offering is a good, but perhaps predestined, campaign generator. Played the series a bunch many years ago. Struggle of Nations remains a favorite. I was actually thinking about the board games 1809 and S&T’s Abensburg/Eckmuhl pairing this week as thoughts of campaigning the 1809 campaign have entered into my thoughts.

I also dug deep into your archives to revisit your Bavarian travels. Great trip you had, Tony!

  5. I really like this unit. Tonally that blue is very pleasing and the white is just so well done ... what is the secret to getting that white to look like that?

    1. Thanks, Norm. I appreciate your kind words. For the white, a simple treatment with a Minwax stain produces what you see.

  6. I meant to add that I use Vallejo Ivory for white, which gets me part way there, but I don't really execute the shading particularly well.

    1. A dip in Minwax does it for me wrt shading and adding in depth.
